Hello,
Thank you for your article.
My experience : I've 2 openmediavault servers on raspberry pi 3. running with 2 disques in BTRFS-RAID1. They work fine.

I've also an OMV serveur virtualized in a proxmox server. This VM shares storage for the other VM's disks. It works fine but sometime freeze or touch the 100% of hard disk activity. I don't know whether i missed something or not. the disks are 4 SSD in BTRFS-RAID5.

kind regards,
Philippe

To show my support, here's my comment.

I have been holding out on buying a pre-built NAS for home for 3-4 years now.
Then somebody in the family is throwing out a 13-year old PC.
- Core 2 Duo with 1GB RAM.
- removed the 54kbps modem card (yes, those things still exist)
- put in a couple of spare 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives. Make them JBOD RAID to appear as a single drive.

Installed OpenMediaVault 4.1.3-1 (Arrakis)
I have enabled SMB/CIFS and an additional MiniDLNA plugin.
Connection from another computer through network drive mapping is convenient.
I have been uploading file for days, as the bottleneck with the old PC is that is has the built-in 100Mbps network card.
Connection from another media player through DLNA works nicely too.

This is worth repeating - OMV requires only 1GB RAM. My OMV Dashboard reports only 14% memory usage.
As long as the old PC lives, I will continue to hold back from buying a pre-built NAS.

After a year of this being posted, I'm surprised no one has commented! I have implemented OMV on a Raspberry Pi at the small business I am head of IT for. It is absolutely fantastic! The software rocks and is superior to the Synology NAS DSM software. We use it as an "off-site" backup (it is located in another building) for our Synology NAS. This thing handles an SQL database way faster than the other NAS. I would recommend OMV!
